GARDNER (September 12, 2013)—Items from a table piled high with hand-crafted mittens, scarves and blankets were recently presented to House of Peace and Education Executive Director Christian Orobello by members of the Binnall House’s newly-founded knitting club.

“We are thrilled to accept this generous donation on behalf of the women and children we serve,” Mr. Orobello said.

According to organizers, HOPE had been selected as a recipient in appreciation and support of the organization’s ongoing work to empower women and children in the Greater Gardner area through skill building.

In early 2013, over a dozen avid knitters residing at the 125 Connors St. complex began to regularly gather, needles in hand, to share patterns, stitches and the desire to reach out into the community to help others.

The knitting club’s recent donation of assorted winter wear was inspired by Project HANDS, a national mission launched by the Retirement Housing Foundation, encouraging civic engagement in retirement communities across the country. Tuesday’s donation was the first but will not be the last, as members of the knitting club plan to continue the initiative indefinitely. Additional recipients will be determined on a need basis.
