Shepherd Park is a community set on 13 beautifully landscaped acres of land. There are 7 buildings specifically designed for older adults who are at least 62 years of age or are disabled. There are 16 studio apartments, 290 one bedroom apartments, of which 36 are handicap accessible, designed to benefit the mobility impaired; and a total of 66 two bedroom apartments. In 2012, most of the kitchens and bathrooms were renovated and updated.
Residents of Shepherd Park Apartments enjoy a wide range of services and amenities including a computer lab with online access, organized classes, such as yoga/exercise, computer sewing and dance classes, bingo nights, and wellness programs. A full-time resident services coordinator works with residents to coordinate access to individual home care services, light housekeeping, medical appointment companions, and laundry services, as well as daily delivered meals through Meals on Wheels. Several buildings feature onsite community rooms, and each building has a laundry facility with card-operated laundry machines. Onsite parking is available for 226 cars.
Shepherd Park was originally constructed in the early 1900s as the House of the Good Shepherd. It was painstakingly rehabilitated and converted to affordable apartments for seniors in 1980. Shepherd Park sits on a self-contained pastoral campus in Hartford’s West End, just east of the West Hartford town line, and provides excellent access to local and regional highways, local services, and downtown Hartford by public transportation.
